Mairead McGuinness Officially Nominated as Fine Gael’s Presidential Candidate
Dublin: Fine Gael has formally nominated former European Commissioner Mairead McGuinness as its candidate for the upcoming presidential election. The party is expected to officially launch her campaign at a major event scheduled for September.
McGuinness, who served as Ireland’s European Commissioner for Financial Services from 2020 to 2024, has a long-standing history within Fine Gael and the European political landscape. Prior to her commission role, she served as an MEP for a decade, including a term as vice-president of the European Parliament. A former RTÉ agricultural journalist, she first entered the European Parliament in 2004 and has remained a high-profile figure ever since.
The party’s internal nomination process concluded this week, with McGuinness emerging as the sole candidate following the withdrawal of MEP Seán Kelly from the race. Although there had been early indications of a potential contest—supported in part by Tánaiste and party leader Simon Harris—Kelly’s exit left McGuinness unopposed. She had previously contested the 2011 presidential election, though the party’s nomination ultimately went to Gay Mitchell.
Under Fine Gael’s rules, presidential hopefuls require the backing of 20 parliamentary party members, 25 party councillors, and five executive council members to secure a nomination. McGuinness met these thresholds comfortably.
In announcing the party’s endorsement, Simon Harris praised McGuinness’s experience and leadership qualities:
“Mairead McGuinness has consistently demonstrated her commitment to public service and European values. She has the vision and integrity to bring people together and lead the country with dignity during a time of great change.”
Meanwhile, Independent TD Catherine Connolly of Galway West has also entered the race and launched her campaign, supported by several left-leaning parties. The presidential contest is expected to see a range of candidates from across the political spectrum, with further announcements anticipated in the coming weeks.
