Powerful 8.7 Magnitude Earthquake Triggers Tsunami Across North Pacific
Tokyo: A massive 8.7-magnitude earthquake in the North Pacific has triggered tsunami waves along the coasts of Russia and Japan, prompting widespread evacuations and international tsunami alerts.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, tsunami waves several meters high struck Nemuro on the eastern coast of Hokkaido. Authorities also warned of waves reaching 8 to 9 meters along the coast of Severo-Kurilsk, the principal town in Russia’s Kuril Islands.
In response to the tsunami threat, the Fukushima nuclear plant was evacuated as a precaution. Sakhalin Region Governor Valery Limarenko urged residents to remain on higher ground until the threat subsides, assuring the public that people were safe.
Tsunami sirens sounded in Honolulu, Hawaii, as residents moved to higher ground. Warnings have also been issued for Alaska, Hawaii, and parts of New Zealand’s southern coast.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre has reported that waves between 1 and 5 meters above sea level could affect coastal areas of Hawaii, Japan, Chile, Ecuador, and the Solomon Islands, while waves over 3 meters are likely along parts of the Russian and Ecuadorian coastlines. Authorities have urged immediate precautionary action to safeguard lives.
