Dublin: Ambulances in Ireland took over an hour to respond to high-priority calls more than 500 times in the first half of 2024, with some delays reaching nearly four hours. However, no one-hour-plus delays were reported for the most critical ‘PURPLE’ calls during this period.
Cork recorded the highest number of prolonged waits, with 77 cases, followed by Wexford, Tipperary, and Kilkenny. Despite a 19-minute target response time for life-threatening incidents, only 47% of ‘RED’ priority calls met this target. The National Ambulance Service noted an 8% rise in calls and identified a significant shortfall of 90 ambulance crews.
