Delhi: The long-awaited Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and the European Union has been finalised, marking a landmark moment in bilateral relations and opening new avenues for economic growth, investment and global market access.
Concluded after 18 years of negotiations, the agreement was formally announced following a high-level meeting in Delhi attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, European Council President António Luís Santos da Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Leaders on both sides described the deal as a transformative step, with European officials calling it the “Mother of All Deals”.
The agreement is expected to significantly reduce trade barriers, lower tariffs and streamline cross-border commerce between India and Europe. Once implemented, it will make a wide range of goods more affordable for consumers and businesses, including products traditionally imported at high cost. For Indian expatriates across Europe, the deal is expected to ease trade-related costs and enhance economic opportunities.
Indian leadership hailed the agreement as a decisive turning point in the country’s economic journey, while European leaders emphasised the strategic importance of closer ties with one of the world’s fastest-growing major economies. The deal comes at a time of increasing uncertainty in global trade, underlining its geopolitical and economic significance.
Key sectors expected to benefit include IT services, pharmaceuticals, textiles, jewellery and agricultural products, with improved access to European markets likely to boost exports and employment. Small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) are also set to gain from increased European investment, technology transfer and enhanced competitiveness in manufacturing, supporting initiatives such as Make in India.
For Europe, the agreement opens greater access to India’s vast consumer base, offering new growth opportunities for industries such as automotive manufacturing, technology, wine and spirits.
Beyond trade, the FTA places strong emphasis on labour rights, environmental protection and sustainable development, reflecting a commitment to responsible and inclusive economic cooperation.
Overall, the India–EU Free Trade Agreement is widely seen as a major step towards establishing a powerful economic partnership, with the potential to shape the future of global trade and strengthen India and Europe’s positions on the world economic stage.
