Anti-Israel protests block ancient Bible exhibition in Ireland

Dublin: The anti-Israel protest at Trinity College shows no signs of abating, with Trinity Students’ Union President Laszlo Molnarfi declaring its indefinite continuation. Approximately eighty students are participating in the encampment.

The protest, situated near the famed Old Library of the college, is aimed at pressuring the university to sever ties with Israeli institutions until certain conditions are met. Molnarfi’s stance includes denying access to the renowned Book of Kells until such actions are taken.

The university’s response, characterised by the closure of campus facilities including libraries and bathrooms, is viewed by the union as an attempt to quell the agitation. This move has been condemned as “shameful.”

The ongoing dispute is further complicated by a significant fine imposed by the university on the union, amounting to 2,14000 euros, for organising a prior strike. Some speculate that the protest is partially motivated by opposition to this penalty. The union’s inability to pay the fine has led Molnarfi to announce plans to contest it in court.

The protesters’ demands primarily revolve around urging Trinity to sever ties with Israeli institutions and condemn the conflict in Gaza. Additional demands include providing scholarships to Palestinians and urging Israel to withdraw from UN-blacklisted institutions, mirroring actions taken during the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Molnarfi cites the University of Galway’s reevaluation of its relationship with Israeli institutions as a precedent for Trinity to follow. Political support for the protest is growing, with the Labour Party endorsing it. Trinity’s investments in Israeli companies, some of which are implicated in activities concerning the occupation of Palestine, have drawn particular scrutiny.

Despite months of peaceful protest, the authorities’ reluctance to address the students’ grievances is increasingly criticised. The spokesperson emphasises the importance of acknowledging and engaging with the concerns of the protesting students.
