Bank Holiday Weekend Sees Hundreds Nabbed for Speeding Violations

Dublin: Over the St. Patrick’s Bank Holiday weekend, 1,800 individuals were apprehended for speeding, reflecting a concerning trend of reckless driving on Irish roads. Gardaí conducted a comprehensive operation spanning from 7 a.m. last Thursday to 7 a.m. on Tuesday, targeting speed violations. Regrettably, despite these efforts, the period witnessed five collisions, resulting in three fatalities and numerous injuries.

One particularly egregious instance occurred on Katharine Tynan Road in Cookstown, Dublin, where a motorist was caught travelling at an alarming speed of 147 km/h in a 60 km/h zone—more than two and a half times the legal limit.

Furthermore, instances of excessive speeding were documented in various regions, including a driver clocked at 209 km/h on the N3 in Duggan, Butlersbridge, Cavan. This same driver was also caught traveling at 113 km/h in a 50 km/h zone in Coolock, North Dublin, and 157 km/h in an 80 km/h zone on the R731 in Rathnure, Monamolin, Wexford.

In addition to speed enforcement, Gardaí conducted over 9,970 roadside tests for drug and alcohol impairment, leading to the arrest of 175 individuals who tested positive. Furthermore, 170 motorists were issued penalty points for using mobile phones while driving, underscoring the pervasive dangers of distracted driving.

Efforts to promote road safety extended beyond speed enforcement, with 59 drivers penalised for failing to wear seat belts. Additionally, 75 vehicles operated by learners without a license and 385 vehicles lacking tax and insurance were seized, reflecting a multifaceted approach to ensuring compliance with road regulations.

Chief Superintendent Jane Humphries of the Garda National Roads Policing Bureau emphasised the paramount importance of safe driving practices in light of these incidents, urging motorists to prioritise caution and adherence to traffic laws for the collective well-being of all road users.
