Barack and Michelle Obama Invited to Accept Dublin’s Highest Civic Honour
Dublin – Former US President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama have been invited to formally receive the Freedom of the City of Dublin, the capital’s most prestigious civic award.
Invitation Renewed Ahead of September Visit
Mayor Ray McAdam sent a formal invitation ahead of the Obamas’ visit to Dublin in September, where Barack Obama is scheduled to speak at the 3Arena. The mayor expressed hopes they would revisit their 2011 trip, reliving warm memories and formally accepting the honour.
The award was conferred in 2017, but the couple had not been able to attend an official ceremony. The Freedom of the City is reserved for individuals who have demonstrated outstanding leadership, global impact, and service to humanity.
Historic List of Recipients
Past recipients include Nelson Mandela, John F. Kennedy, Mikhail Gorbachev, Greta Thunberg, and Dr. Tony Holohan. In total, 88 people received the honour in 2023 alone. Notably, Bob Geldof returned his award in protest against Aung San Suu Kyi’s inclusion—her name was subsequently removed.
Symbolic Rights and Duties
Though the award carries no monetary benefit, recipients gain symbolic privileges, such as:
- The right to graze sheep in city parks, including St. Stephen’s Green
- Duty-free entry of goods into the city
- The right to vote in city and parliamentary elections
- Ceremonial duties, such as being prepared to defend the city if required
