Brazil Floods: Death Toll Rises To 75..

Severe rainfall and widespread flooding have devastated Brazil’s southern Rio Grande do Sul state, resulting in a tragic loss of nearly 75 lives, with 103 individuals reported missing.

The calamity has forced over 88,000 people from their homes, with approximately 16,000 seeking shelter in temporary accommodations such as schools and gyms. Governor Eduardo Leite has described the situation as unprecedented, declaring a state of emergency.

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, accompanied by several ministers, including Defence Minister Jose Mucio and Environment Minister Marina Silva, assessed the damage firsthand during a visit to Porto Alegre. Rescue operations are in full swing, targeting survivors trapped amidst collapsed infrastructure. The rising water levels pose a significant threat to Porto Alegre, with dams under strain.

Forecasters have issued warnings of further danger, particularly along the Guaiba River, prompting urgent evacuations and disrupting essential services like clean water access. The region faces its gravest disaster yet, with authorities racing against time to mitigate the crisis.
