Data Breach Exposes Personal Information of 300,000 Taxi Passengers on Public Website

Dublin: Concerns have arisen among hundreds of thousands of users in Ireland and the UK regarding the security of their personal information on an online taxi app following the discovery by a cybersecurity researcher.

Jeremiah Fowler, a cybersecurity researcher, revealed that he found a password-protected database containing the names, phone numbers, and email addresses of 300,000 taxi passengers in Ireland and the UK. Fowler disclosed this information via VPN Mentor, an online privacy website.

The database was reportedly discovered by Dublin-based ICAB, a provider of taxi dispatch platform technology. Fowler clarified that there is no evidence suggesting any wrongdoing on the part of ICAB or its partners, and there is no indication that the data was compromised or accessed by unauthorized parties.

ICAB acknowledged the incident and stated that appropriate measures have been taken, with the affected taxi companies being notified. The Data Protection Commission (DPC) confirmed its awareness of the situation and is currently engaged in discussions with ICAB regarding the matter.
