Demand for GP Services in Ireland to Rise by Up to 30% by 2040, ESRI Study Finds
Dublin: New research from the ESRI projects a significant rise in demand for general practice services in Ireland, with GP consultations expected to increase by 23–30% by 2040. The increase is attributed primarily to population growth, which could see Ireland’s population grow from 5.3 million in 2023 to between 5.9 and 6.3 million.
The ageing demographic will also contribute to the rise in demand, with GP consultations projected to reach up to 25.2 million annually by 2040. This will necessitate an estimated 943 to 1,211 additional GPs. General practice nurse consultations are also expected to grow by over 30%, requiring up to 868 more nurses.
The Irish College of GPs welcomed the findings, calling for urgent action from the HSE and Department of Health to address workforce shortages and support long-term planning through the expedited completion of the Strategic Review of General Practice.
