Details of Long-Awaited Solar Panel Scheme for Schools Set to be Unveiled Today

After over a year since its initial announcement, specifics of a scheme to finance the installation of solar panels in schools are anticipated to be disclosed today. The initiative aims to assist schools in curbing energy expenses and reducing carbon emissions by installing up to 16 roof-mounted solar panels per school, equivalent to six kilowatts of power.

Presently, only 5% of primary and 10% of post-primary schools in Ireland have photovoltaic panels installed. The programme, announced by the government in September 2022, pledged funding in the subsequent months, which, however, did not materialize. A budget of €50 million has been earmarked for the solar panels for schools program under the Climate Action Plan.

Additionally, schools will receive funding to connect to the grid, allowing them to harness unused solar energy during closures. Compensation for exported energy during peak solar months, particularly during school summer holidays, will be provided, as outlined by the Department of Education.

Concerns about the delay in implementing the scheme were raised during an Oireachtas committee hearing last month. An Assistant Secretary at the Department of Education emphasised the department’s eagerness to initiate the programme and assured ongoing efforts to address practicalities.

Beyond aiding individual schools in reducing energy costs, the initiative aligns with the sector’s emission reduction targets. The 2021 Climate Action Plan has set a goal of a 51% reduction in emissions from schools by 2030.
