Diesel Prices Expected to Rise by Up to 10 Cent Per Litre Across Ireland

Dublin: Motorists across Ireland are being warned to expect a sharp increase in fuel prices, with diesel expected to rise by up to 10 cent per litre by the weekend, while petrol prices are also set to increase.

The Convenience Stores and Newsagents Association (CSNA) said the wholesale price of diesel delivered to filling stations increased by 8 cent per litre before VAT on Thursday. Once VAT is included, this is expected to translate into an increase of around 10 cent per litre at the pumps.

As a result, the average retail price of diesel—currently around €1.70 per litre—could rise to approximately €1.80 per litre in some parts of the country.

The CSNA represents more than 1,500 retailers, including over 300 service stations nationwide, meaning the price increases are expected to be reflected across most forecourts in the coming days.

Petrol Prices Also Set to Increase

Petrol prices are also expected to edge higher, although the increase is likely to be more modest.

According to the CSNA, the wholesale price of petrol has risen by around 2 cent per litre before VAT, which is expected to result in a 2–3 cent per litre increase at filling stations over the coming days.

Excise Duty Relief Remains in Place

The government previously introduced temporary excise duty reductions to help ease the burden of rising fuel costs. Under the current measures, excise duty was reduced by 32 cent per litre on diesel and 27 cent per litre on petrol.

These reductions will remain in effect until early September, after which they are scheduled to be phased out gradually in four stages.

Meanwhile, industry representative body Fuels for Ireland has urged the Government to establish an independent expert group to develop a long-term strategy on fuel taxation and pricing.

Chief Executive Kevin McPartlan said Ireland needs a clear and coordinated policy that balances fuel taxation, consumer affordability and the country’s decarbonisation objectives.
