A pilot program for a special awareness program against racism and xenophobia, intended to launch for transition year (TY) students in schools in the Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown County Council area, has begun successfully at Oatlands College.
The program is organised by the Dún Laoghaire Integration Forum in collaboration with the Department of Justice and Integration and the Social Inclusion Unit of Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown County Council.
The main objectives of the project are to:
• help transition year students to understand the need for intercultural awareness and the need to strive for unity among friends regardless of race, gender, language, or culture;
• create a junior integration forum in each school, which will be run and managed by transition year students.
A pilot program conducted at Oatlands College prior to the project was led by Roos Demol, CEO of International Community Dynamics, and Nadia Moussed, Intercultural, Diversity and Anti-Racism Trainer from Cork.
An Cathaoirleach, Una Power, was the chief guest at the closing ceremony held at Oatlands College on World Day for Cultural Diversity (May 21st) and presented certificates to the participants.
Mary White (Social Inclusion Unit, Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown), Oatlands College Principal Ms. Caroline Garrett, TY Coordinator Darren Cullen and Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown Integration Forum Chairperson Reji Chacko Jacob were also present.
