Dublin: The number of individuals refused entry at Dublin Airport due to lack of travel documents fell by 30% in 2024, with 2,293 refusals compared to 3,287 in 2023, according to new Department of Justice figures. The decline follows higher fines imposed on airlines and ferry operators in August 2023, increasing penalties from €3,000 to €5,000 for allowing passengers to travel without proper documentation.
In total, 5,255 individuals were denied entry at Dublin Airport last year, marking a 10% decrease from 5,826 in 2023. While refusals due to missing documents dropped, cases involving false documents and importers rose by 23.5%, from 872 to 1,077.
Despite a 4% increase in passenger traffic to 17.3 million, refusals continued to decline due to enhanced cooperation between the Department of Justice, the Garda National Immigration Bureau (GNIB), and airlines. Measures included staff training, intelligence-led operations, and in-flight document checks. In 2024, the Border Management Unit (BMU) conducted over 7,300 inspections at Dublin Airport to identify undocumented arrivals.
