Dublin City Council to Phase Out Plastic Bin Bags Within Two Years
Dublin: Dublin City Council has committed to eliminating the use of plastic bin bags for waste collection across the city within 18 to 24 months. While most households already use bins, exemptions remain in parts of the inner city due to limited space in older terraced homes and apartments.
The continued use of plastic bags has been linked to increased littering, with Dublin north inner city recently named the most littered area in Ireland by Irish Business Against Litter.
Council spokesperson Derek Kelly acknowledged the challenge but confirmed a pilot scheme is set to begin around Grafton Street, involving the installation of waste compactors and alternative disposal options for residents. A similar rollout is planned for the north city and other urban areas. The council has also invested in additional staff and modern cleaning equipment to improve the city’s cleanliness.
