ECB Approves Bulgaria’s Entry into Eurozone from January 2026

Brussels: The European Central Bank (ECB) has formally approved Bulgaria’s adoption of the euro as its official currency, confirming that the country has met all necessary convergence criteria. Pending final approval, Bulgaria is set to become the 21st member of the euro area on January 1, 2026.

The ECB’s endorsement follows a comprehensive assessment of Bulgaria’s progress in key areas, including inflation rates, fiscal stability, exchange rate alignment, interest rate convergence, and compliance with central bank legislation.

Despite earlier delays due to economic challenges—particularly related to inflation—Bulgaria’s recent progress has been significant. Inflation in the country declined to 2.7% in April, allowing it to meet the ECB’s price stability threshold for euro adoption.

While the ECB’s backing is a critical milestone, the final decision rests with the EU Council of Finance Ministers, who are expected to make a formal determination in early July. If political consensus is reached, representatives from Bulgaria’s central bank will begin participating as observers in key ECB bodies, including the Governing Council responsible for setting interest rates.

Bulgaria has long expressed its ambition to join the eurozone. Its entry reflects years of structural reforms and macroeconomic alignment with EU standards. The move is expected to strengthen Bulgaria’s financial integration within the EU and enhance economic resilience.
