Fake OET Scam: Scam OET Certificates Pose Risk to Job Seekers in Ireland

Dublin: Continuing a trend observed in the UK, concerns arise over potential repercussions for nurses found to have engaged in fraudulent activities related to the Occupational English Test (OET) in Ireland.

A multinational corporation based in Britain uncovered discrepancies regarding nurses who acquired OET certificates through a centre in Chandigarh in October 2021 under suspicious circumstances. Subsequently, these individuals were requested to provide explanations for their actions. It’s indicated that the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) will undertake a comprehensive investigation into the matter. Specifically, scrutiny will extend to individuals who received certificates from the Chandigarh centre between December 2021 and December 2023. Documents of those associated with the centre during this timeframe will undergo a thorough examination.

In conjunction with this investigation, NMBI has initiated the process of issuing notices to individuals who secured employment using certificates obtained within the specified timeframe (December 2021 to December 2023). Overseas Registrations in the UK has reportedly issued notices to 148 individuals identified in connection with the alleged fraud. Additionally, NMBI in Ireland has taken similar action, serving notices to approximately 100 individuals.

Concerns have surfaced on social media regarding allegations that certain OET exam centres offered question papers to candidates ahead of schedule in exchange for substantial payments. Notably, last year, the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) in the UK dismissed 500 Nigerian nurses who obtained fake Computer Based Test (CBT) certificates, casting doubt on the credibility of nurses from Nigeria. This incident prompts questions about potential parallels for Indian applicants in Ireland who might face similar scrutiny. Reports suggest that individuals who obtained OET certificates through fraudulent means paid considerable sums, exceeding twenty lakh rupees, to facilitators.
