Families Advocate Independent Probe into HSE’s Cherry Orchard Hospital Unit Relocation

The families of residents at Cherry Orchard Hospital are demanding an independent investigation into the decision by the Health Service Executive (HSE) to relocate residents from two units due to structural concerns. Despite protests, 40 residents have already been moved off-site, while 22 remain.

The HSE’s decision came after structural issues, including weakening floors, were flagged by the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) in 2022. However, contradicting statements from the HSE regarding the severity of these issues have raised concerns among families and local representatives.

Efforts by politicians to find solutions, including seeking clarification from the HSE, have been met with responses indicating insufficient capacity to accommodate residents on-site during renovations.

The families are calling for swift resolution and an independent inquiry into the events leading to the relocation decision. With deaths among residents occurring since the announcement, tensions remain high, and the standoff persists until a satisfactory agreement is reached.
