Gardaí Arrest 10 in Response to Refugee Centre Arson Incidents

Dublin: Amidst broad political support, including from parties like Fianna Fáil and the Green Party, for immigrants in Ireland, the government has taken action following accusations by the Green Party Minister. The Minister criticised the Garda for their perceived inaction regarding recent assaults on asylum centres.

The Garda press office revealed that ten individuals have been apprehended. Integration Minister Roderic O’Gorman has expressed keen interest in the arrests made by the Garda concerning the raids on locations housing refugees. The Garda released detailed figures in response.

Regarding the New Year’s Eve incident at the disused Shipwright pub in Dublin’s Irishtown, three individuals have been arrested. Additionally, five people have been apprehended in connection with the criminal incident on Sandwith Street on May 12, 2023. Furthermore, two men were arrested for damaging a residential building in Killarney on January 1 and have appeared before the District Court in Kerry.

Meanwhile, Gardaí have intensified their investigation into the arson at the Rose Lake Hotel in Galway. Four searches have been conducted in relation to the incident. The Garda emphasised that arson and property damage are serious offences punishable by life imprisonment.

Minister Roderic O’Gorman underscored that the absence of physical harm in these attacks does not diminish their gravity. He highlighted how these incidents negatively impact the department’s efforts in providing accommodation for vulnerable individuals. The minister has convened with Garda Commissioner Drew Harris to address the issue.

Simultaneously, the Minister of Justice and the Garda Commissioner have appeared before the Parliamentary Committee on Justice to address the surge in attacks. However, pertinent details regarding the perpetrators were not disclosed to the committee.

Following the COVID-19 period, there has been a significant increase in refugee influx to Ireland, up to tenfold. The accommodation of all these individuals in settlement centres has sparked widespread protests within the Irish community.
