Government Data Reveals Assistance Provided to Over 2,000 Irish Citizens Abroad in 2023

Official figures from the Department of Foreign Affairs highlight that a total of 2,043 cases required consular assistance for Irish citizens while abroad in 2023. Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs Micheál Martin disclosed that these cases encompassed various situations, including facilitating the evacuation of Irish citizens from Gaza, addressing missing persons cases, assisting individuals who were arrested overseas, and managing instances of death and serious injury.

The statistics also underscore a notable demand for consular aid in instances of Irish citizens facing complications arising from medical cosmetic procedures conducted abroad. Additionally, the department dealt with 10 cases of child abduction and 27 child welfare cases during the same period.
