Government Faces Criticism Over Insufficient Aid for Storm Eowyn Victims
Dublin – The government is facing significant backlash over what critics describe as an inadequate aid package for those affected by Storm Eowyn. Concerns have been raised over the Humanitarian Assistance Support Scheme, which is reportedly providing an average of just €195 per affected homeowner.
Limited Financial Support Provided
To date, only 1,613 homeowners have received aid from the Department of Social Protection, with a total expenditure of just €316,000—a figure many argue is insufficient given the scale of devastation. Even weeks after the storm, 89,000 people remain without electricity, exacerbating the hardship faced by affected households.
Critics have condemned the government’s response, with some labelling it a grossly inadequate and slow-moving relief effort. Many victims of the storm continue to struggle with loss of electricity, water supply, and extensive property damage.
Government’s Response and Available Assistance
The Department of Social Protection has stated that financial assistance is available to homeowners in areas still without electricity and water. The department also confirmed that support is available for temporary accommodation when required.
For home repairs, furniture, and appliance replacement, aid is subject to income limits. Households exceeding the set income threshold may receive assistance at a reduced rate, with the amount awarded based on both the severity of the damage and the homeowner’s financial ability to cover the costs.
The Humanitarian Assistance Scheme (HAS) provides emergency relief for food, clothing, and essential personal items, with no income restrictions for these forms of aid. Similarly, alternative accommodation assistance is available without income consideration.
The Department of Social Protection has assured that the Community Welfare Service is working alongside local government bodies to distribute financial assistance. Additionally, Community Welfare Officers have been deployed to visit the homes of affected residents to assess their needs and provide direct support.
