Green Party Pledges Housing for Refugees on State-Owned Land
Dublin: The Green Party has announced a commitment to providing housing for 14,000 refugees arriving in Ireland, utilising state-owned land for new developments. This pledge comes amidst ongoing challenges, with over 30,000 refugees currently in the country, many of whom remain without adequate accommodation.
Party leader and Minister for Integration, Roderic O’Gorman, highlighted this initiative during an interview on The Pat Kenny Show, positioning it as a central pillar of the Green Party’s election campaign. He acknowledged that the current reliance on private-sector facilities has resulted in accommodation shortages, particularly in hotels, impacting sectors like tourism.
A Shift Toward State-Led Solutions
O’Gorman emphasised the importance of moving away from private-sector dependency by constructing housing on government-owned land and repurposing secondhand buildings. This approach aims to ensure more sustainable and reliable accommodation solutions for refugees.

Despite criticism over prioritising refugees over long-standing appeals from foreign workers for family reunification and settlement opportunities, O’Gorman argued that investments in supporting refugees would yield significant long-term benefits for Ireland. He expressed optimism that the country’s spending on integration and housing would strengthen communities and contribute positively to the economy.

The Green Party’s election campaign has positioned O’Gorman as a prominent advocate for refugee welfare, particularly in areas like Blanchardstown, which has a significant Indian community.
