Healthcare assistants in Ireland may also be allowed flat-rate expenses

Dublin: Overseas Healthcare Assistants Advocate for Equal Tax Benefits as Nurses.

Healthcare assistants are calling for parity in flat-rate expenses with nurses, who currently receive a tax refund exceeding €700. In Ireland, 100% of nurses benefit from this tax refund, covering uniforms and essential expenses. Healthcare assistants argue that they should be entitled to the same benefits.

According to the Safety, Health, and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007, employers are obligated to provide protective clothing and equipment to employees. While healthcare assistants were previously excluded from the list of eligible employees, there is now a push for their inclusion. Employees who do not receive these expenses from employers can typically claim them as part of their annual tax credits.

The Association of Overseas Healthcare Assistants working in Ireland has formally requested the Department of Finance and Revenue to extend flat-rate expenses to healthcare assistants. Both departments have assured the panel that they will carefully consider the request, recognising its significance.
