Healthcare Strike Looms as HSE and Unions Struggle to Reach Agreement
Dublin: Negotiations between the Health Service Executive (HSE) and various healthcare unions at the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) continue without resolution, raising concerns over an imminent strike by healthcare workers in Ireland.
While nurses in Ireland are set to begin industrial action, they will not fully withdraw from work. Instead, they will adhere strictly to their contractual obligations—performing only standard duties, working contracted hours, and refusing overtime or additional tasks beyond their agreements.
Ongoing Talks and Unresolved Disputes
Discussions between the HSE and unions, including INMO, FORSA, UNITE, CONNECT, MLSA, SIPTU, and IMO, have been ongoing for two days, but no agreement has been reached. The unions have announced a strike set to begin on March 31.
In an effort to prevent the strike, the HSE has proposed:
- Increased consultation with unions on future staffing decisions.
- Greater conversion of agency positions to permanent HSE roles.
- New training initiatives to support staff development.
However, unions have countered with alternative proposals, and the HSE has requested more time to review them. Unions argue that recruitment restrictions and job cuts have created unsafe conditions for both patients and staff. Meanwhile, the HSE maintains that additional funding and an increased workforce have addressed these concerns.
Targeted Strike at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital
In addition to the national strike threat, the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) and FORSA have announced a one-day strike at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda on April 8. This action protests management’s decision to employ agency staff in all grades and categories during the strike.
INMO General Secretary Phil Ní Sheaghdha has warned that if the government does not respond positively, a full strike will begin on Monday morning. The Psychiatric Nurses Association (PNA) has also voiced support for the industrial action.
The HSE remains committed to finding a resolution but has acknowledged that if the strike proceeds, essential services will be impacted.
