Humphreys and Kelly Enter Fine Gael Race for Presidency
Dublin: Two high-profile figures have joined the contest to become Fine Gael’s presidential candidate following Mairead McGuinness’ withdrawal for health reasons.
Former minister Heather Humphreys, known for her strong cross-border links and unionist family background, confirmed she will seek the party’s nomination. She said her priority would be to strengthen north-south relations, adding she has “plenty in the tank” for the campaign.
Fine Gael MEP and former GAA president Séan Kelly has also declared his candidacy, describing himself as “delighted and enthusiastic” about the opportunity after reconsidering his earlier decision not to run.
Tánaiste Simon Harris confirmed nominations are open until 2 September, with a candidate to be selected by mid-September. The presidential election must take place before 11 November, when President Michael D. Higgins’ term ends.
