India Day in Ireland Postponed Amid Rising Attacks on Indian Community
Dublin: The Ireland India Council has postponed this year’s India Day celebrations, citing safety concerns following a spate of violent attacks on members of the Indian community. The decision was made after discussions with Deputy Prime Minister Simon Harris.
Recent Incidents Spark Alarm
Recent assaults include the attack of a six-year-old Indian-origin girl in southeast Ireland and the stabbing of an Indian taxi driver in Dublin, both involving racial abuse. The Indian Embassy in Dublin has issued a safety advisory, urging nationals to avoid deserted areas at night.
Concerns Over Online Hate
Council co-chair Prashant Shukla highlighted a rise in anti-immigrant propaganda on social media, linking it to false claims blaming Indians for Ireland’s housing crisis.
The Indian community is calling for a cross-departmental hate crime task force, formal recognition of anti-Indian attacks as hate crimes, and laws holding parents responsible for repeated violent behaviour by minors.
New Date Pending
India Day, one of Ireland’s largest cultural events, will be rescheduled, with the new date to be announced later. Ireland is home to around 80,000 people of Indian descent, representing about 1% of the population.
