Irish Government Considers €1 Billion Boost to Future Ireland Fund as Infrastructure and Education Plans Advance

Dublin: The Irish Cabinet is considering a proposal to allocate an additional €1 billion to the Future Ireland Fund, bringing the fund’s projected value to €5.8 billion by 2027. The investment is intended to help the country prepare for long-term economic and demographic challenges, particularly those arising from an ageing population.

If approved, the additional allocation would bring the total amount transferred by the government into the fund by the end of 2027 to €22.77 billion.

Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Simon Harris said investing in the fund was an important step towards protecting future generations from economic uncertainty and rising public expenditure.

He said setting aside resources now would help ease future financial pressures and prevent the burden of increased costs from falling disproportionately on younger generations.

Subject to Cabinet approval, Harris is expected to bring a motion before Dáil Éireann before the end of this year seeking authorisation for the additional transfer in 2027.

Government seeks to speed up land transfers for infrastructure projects

Meanwhile, Public Expenditure Minister Jack Chambers will brief the Cabinet on progress towards accelerating the transfer of government-owned land required for major infrastructure developments.

Government departments and agencies have been instructed to prioritise the transfer of land needed for projects considered critical to the country.

The initiative aims to simplify administrative procedures, streamline the approval process and significantly reduce the time required to complete land transfers. The move is expected to help remove delays affecting the delivery of essential infrastructure projects.

New forum to strengthen support for students with special educational needs

Education Minister Hildegarde Naughton will also brief the Cabinet on plans to establish an Inclusion Education Forum focusing on students with special educational needs. The forum is scheduled to hold its first meeting in November.

Its main objective will be to develop a shared vision for inclusive education and identify practical measures to ensure that students with additional needs receive appropriate support.

The forum will bring together key stakeholders from across the education sector to improve coordination, share expertise and help create more inclusive and supportive learning environments for students with special educational needs.
