India commenced their Super 8 campaign in the 2024 T20 World Cup with a commanding 47-run victory over Afghanistan. Suryakumar Yadav’s brisk 53 off 28 deliveries laid the foundation for India’s total of 181/8. Partnering with Hardik Pandya, he crafted a crucial 60-run partnership off 37 balls for the fifth wicket, while Axar Patel’s quickfire 12 off 6 balls bolstered the score.
Afghanistan’s bowlers initially contained India’s batting lineup, with Rohit Sharma falling early to Fazalhaq Farooqi in the third over. Rashid Khan added pressure, dismissing Rishabh Pant and Virat Kohli in quick succession, the latter departing for a 24-ball 24.
After Kohli’s dismissal, Suryakumar Yadav assumed control, forming a pivotal partnership with Hardik Pandya until the latter’s exit for 32 off 24 balls in the 18th over.
India’s bowlers then took charge as Jasprit Bumrah wreaked havoc with impressive figures of 3/7, including early dismissals of both Afghan openers. Supported by spinner Kuldeep Yadav, India stifled Afghanistan’s run flow through the middle overs, precipitating a collapse that saw Afghanistan lose three wickets in the powerplay and struggle thereafter. Arshdeep Singh and Bumrah claimed three wickets each, with Bumrah conceding a mere seven runs in his four overs, boasting an exceptional economy rate of 1.75.
India’s comprehensive performance marked a strong start to their campaign in the tournament, characterised by impactful contributions both with the bat and ball.
