India to Investigate Train Collision in West Bengal After Fatalities

India will initiate an investigation on Tuesday into a train collision in West Bengal that claimed nine lives and injured over 50 individuals. The incident involved a freight train colliding with the Kanchanjunga Express, bound for Kolkata from Tripura. Chetan Kumar Shrivastava, general manager of Northeast Frontier Railway, announced that the inquiry, led by India’s top railway safety official, will commence. It will include eyewitness testimonies, examination of official records, and statements from railway personnel regarding signalling and safety protocols. The collision was attributed to the alleged disregard of a signal by the freight train’s deceased driver. This tragedy has renewed scrutiny on railway safety in India, prompting calls for improved measures to prevent human error in rail operations.
