India to Open Consulates in Belfast and Manchester to Boost UK-India Bilateral Relations
Belfast: As part of efforts to strengthen bilateral ties between the UK and India, India is set to open consulates in Belfast and Manchester this week. The Belfast consulate will be situated in Clarence House in the city centre. Indian External Affairs Minister Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, who is currently on an official visit to the UK and Ireland, will inaugurate the new consulate.
The decision to open the consulates was announced by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi last November on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Brazil. Dr. Jaishankar will also visit Manchester for the opening of the second consulate.
Dr. Jaishankar arrived in London on Tuesday morning and held discussions with UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy. He is scheduled to arrive in Dublin on Thursday, where he will meet Deputy Prime Minister Simon Harris during his two-day visit to Ireland.
The opening of the Belfast consulate is particularly significant as more than 10,000 Indians, including students, reside in Northern Ireland.
