Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar Embarks on Crucial UK and Ireland Visit to Strengthen European Ties
Dublin: Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has arrived in the United Kingdom as part of a diplomatic tour aimed at bolstering India’s relations with Europe amid shifting geopolitical dynamics. During his visit, Jaishankar is set to meet UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy and other prominent leaders. He will also travel to Ireland on the 6th and 7th, where he will hold discussions with Irish Foreign Minister Simon Harris, other dignitaries, and representatives of the Indian community.
The primary focus of Jaishankar’s visit is advancing negotiations on a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the UK. The trip is seen as a key step in reinforcing the India-EU roadmap, following recent high-level discussions between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
India’s European outreach is gaining strategic significance against the backdrop of global geopolitical challenges, including tensions arising from the Ukraine conflict and strained US-Europe relations. Jaishankar’s visit is viewed as a follow-up to Modi’s discussions on trade, technical cooperation, and defence partnerships with European leaders.
The India-UK FTA holds special importance, as it would mark India’s first comprehensive trade agreement with a Western country. The deal is anticipated to serve as a blueprint for future trade agreements with other key partners, including the European Union.
Highlighting the growing importance of the India-EU partnership, Prime Minister Modi recently emphasised the need for stronger collaboration in light of rapidly evolving global economic and political conditions. Jaishankar echoed this sentiment in his previous meeting with David Lammy in June, underscoring the vast untapped potential in the bilateral relationship.
The visit comes on the heels of UK Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds’ recent trip to New Delhi, where both countries announced plans to resume negotiations on the FTA, a bilateral investment treaty, and a special social security agreement. Jaishankar’s visit is expected to further accelerate these initiatives and deepen India’s engagement with Europe.
