“Indian Football Legend Sunil Chhetri Announces Retirement”

New Delhi: Indian football icon and national team captain Sunil Chhetri has announced his retirement from international football.

In a video shared on social media, Chhetri revealed that he will retire from the national team following the World Cup qualifying round match against Kuwait on June 6.

Chhetri, hailing from Secunderabad, made his international debut in 2002 by scoring a goal against Pakistan. Over his illustrious career, he has played the most matches and scored the most goals for the Indian national team, with 150 appearances and 94 goals. He is currently the third-highest goal scorer among active international players, behind only Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo and Argentina’s Lionel Messi.

Chhetri took on the role of captain for the Indian team in 2015, leading the country to victories in several tournaments, including the Nehru Cup. He also captained Bengaluru FC to a title in the Indian Super League and played for 11 clubs both domestically and internationally.

In recognition of his contributions to football, Chhetri has been honoured with the Arjuna Award, the Padma Shri, and the Khel Ratna ward. Additionally, he has been named the All India Football Federation Player of the Year six times.
