Indian Man Sentenced to 2.5 Years for Drunk Driving Incident Injuring Young Women
Longford: An Irish court has sentenced a 46-year-old Indian man, Jason Kurien, to two and a half years in prison for dangerous driving under the influence of alcohol, which resulted in serious injuries to a group of young women. The incident occurred in Ballymahon, County Longford, on April 9, 2023.
Details of the Incident
Jason Kurien, a resident of Ballycare Court, Ballyleague, Roscommon, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving. The crash took place on the R392 road at approximately 3 a.m. as Kurien was returning home in his Volkswagen Caddy van after catering at private and public events in Multyfarnham and Mullingar.
Kurien, who admitted to consuming wine and whiskey before driving, collided with a car carrying a group of young women from Longford returning home to Ballymahon. The impact caused the women’s car to spin 360 degrees before hitting a wall.
One of the women, ‘Ms. Fox’, suffered severe injuries requiring brain surgery.
The driver of the car, ‘Kane’, who is Ms. Fox’s husband, was also injured.
Both were initially treated at Midland Regional Hospital, Tullamore, with Ms. Fox later transferred to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin.
Court Findings
– A roadside breathalyser test revealed Kurien had 48 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of breath, more than twice the legal limit for driving in Ireland.
– At the time of the accident, Kurien was driving at a speed between 70 and 73 km/h and was observed repeatedly crossing the white line, failing to maintain lane discipline.
– Kurien claimed that the glare of headlights from an oncoming vehicle impaired his vision, but this argument was dismissed by the court.
