INMO Issues Warning: Hospitals at Risk of Becoming Disaster Centres

Dublin: In a stark warning issued by the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO), Ireland’s hospitals are depicted as teetering on the brink of disaster, primarily attributed to a critical shortage of staff.

With recruitment bans in place, hospitals are struggling to maintain safe staffing levels, resulting in a distressing scenario where 415 patients were left languishing on trolleys without receiving essential treatment across the nation on Friday alone. This alarming trend follows a concerning precedent from the previous week, during which 396 patients endured agonising waits for available beds in hospitals, as reported by the organisation.

Limerick University Hospital emerged as the epicentre of patient overcrowding, bearing the brunt with 106 patients experiencing delays in receiving treatment. Galway University Hospital and St. Vincent’s University Hospital in Dublin were not spared, with 50 and 33 patients, respectively, awaiting vital care.

The sight of trolleys cluttering hospital corridors was not isolated, as Cork University Hospital reported 25 cases, closely followed by Kerry University Hospital with 24. The INMO underscores the inherent danger posed to both patients and healthcare staff amidst such overcrowded conditions, emphasising the urgent need for intervention and support to alleviate the strain on Ireland’s healthcare system.
