Ireland Among Most Expensive Countries in Europe for Food, Drink, and Tobacco—CSO Report
Dublin: A new report by the Central Statistics Office (CSO), based on Eurostat data, reveals that Ireland had the highest prices for non-alcoholic beverages in Europe in 2024—40% above the EU27 average.
Ireland was the third most expensive EU country for food, with prices 12% higher than the EU27 average. Only Switzerland and Luxembourg ranked higher.
Tobacco Prices Highest in Europe
Ireland led all 36 surveyed countries in tobacco prices, which were 159% above the EU27 average.
Alcohol Prices Nearly Double EU Average
In alcoholic beverages, Ireland was the second priciest in both the Eurozone and EU, with costs close to twice the EU average.
High Rankings Across Food Categories
Ireland also ranked among the top ten in various food subcategories, including bread and cereals, dairy, meat, and fish, further highlighting the country’s elevated consumer costs.
In contrast, North Macedonia had the lowest prices for both food and non-alcoholic beverages, underscoring the wide pricing disparity across Europe.
