Ireland Enforces New Online Safety Rules for Video Platforms
Dublin: From today, Ireland’s Online Safety Code comes into effect, requiring video-sharing platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and X to implement robust age verification and content moderation systems.
The code aims to protect users from harmful material, including cyberbullying, self-harm, eating disorders, violent content, pornography, and dangerous online challenges. Platforms found in breach face penalties of up to €20 million or 10% of global turnover.
The rules prohibit reliance on self-declared ages and suggest privacy-conscious age assurance tools such as facial recognition or ID verification. Platforms must also offer parental controls.
The Online Safety Code, adopted by media regulator Coimisiún na Meán in October 2024, complements the EU Digital Services Act (DSA). While it doesn’t regulate recommender algorithms or disinformation, the DSA addresses these areas at the EU level.
Snapchat is not included in the current list of designated platforms, as its EU headquarters is not in Ireland.
The new rules mark a significant step in strengthening digital protections for users, especially children, across Ireland and the EU.
