Dublin: The Department of Labour has announced that a total of 38,819 work permits have been issued in Ireland so far this year, including 5,709 renewals. Over 12,000 of these permits were granted within the health sector, predominantly for nurses and healthcare assistants.
Additionally, more than 6,500 permits were issued to ICT professionals, while over 3,500 permits were granted in the agriculture sector. Another notable group includes 3,000 chefs who have received work permits, underscoring the demand across diverse industries.
Shift From Dublin: A Historic First
For the first time in history, Dublin has lost its dominant position in terms of work permit allocations. Employment Minister Emer Higgins highlighted this shift, stating it reflects a growing willingness among workers to seek opportunities outside the capital city.
Critical Skills Employment Permits Lead the Way
Of the total permits issued, 51% are categorised as Critical Skills Employment Permits. These permits cover roles such as doctors, nurses, engineers, and ICT professionals, with an average salary of €58,746.
Minister Higgins also announced the addition of 43 new occupations to the work permit eligibility list, further expanding opportunities for skilled professionals across sectors.
Enhancements to Work Permit Processes
To meet rising demand and improve efficiency, the work permit processing team has been expanded, and the application process has been streamlined. Minister Higgins revealed that further innovations are on the horizon, with plans to modernise the system through a new cloud-based IT infrastructure.
“This transition will revolutionise how work permits are applied for, processed, and issued,” said Minister Higgins. “The upgrades will ensure a faster, more efficient system that meets the needs of Ireland’s evolving workforce.”
