Ireland Pledges Emergency Aid to Gaza Amid Ceasefire Efforts
Dublin: Ireland will provide emergency shelter and food aid to Gaza, Deputy Prime Minister Simon Harris announced ahead of his meeting with Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammed Mustafa at the Munich Security Conference on Saturday. Harris confirmed that Irish-funded humanitarian assistance will arrive in Gaza next week.
During their discussions, Harris and Mustafa addressed the ongoing ceasefire, the release of Israeli hostages, the urgent need for increased humanitarian aid, and Ireland’s continued support. They also discussed Gaza’s reconstruction, governance, and security as part of long-term stability efforts.
Harris emphasised the importance of maintaining the fragile ceasefire, urging all parties to fully adhere to it. He also called for the release of all hostages, an end to violence, and a significant escalation in humanitarian relief efforts.
Humanitarian Crisis and International Response
The situation in Gaza remains tense amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. Although Hamas recently released three Israeli hostages in exchange for more than 300 Palestinian prisoners, tensions persist. The extensive network of Hamas tunnels inside Gaza remains a key concern for Israeli authorities, who estimate that fully dismantling them could take years.
Palestinian officials have expressed alarm over a reported U.S. plan to dismantle and redevelop underground bases in Gaza. U.S. President Donald Trump has put forward a controversial proposal to relocate Palestinian civilians and transform the war-torn region into the “Riviera of the Middle East.”
Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is on a diplomatic tour of the Middle East, starting in Israel, to brief regional leaders on the proposal and discuss broader security concerns. The U.S. has also signalled support for a possible resumption of Israeli military operations if Hamas fails to comply with ceasefire agreements.
