Ireland Sees 6% Increase in Nursing Workforce, Alongside Growth in Healthcare Professions
Dublin: The number of nurses in Ireland has increased by 6% compared to 2023, according to the latest government figures released by the Department of Health. The data, compiled as part of the Non-Monetary Healthcare Statistics Questionnaire—a joint initiative by Eurostat, the OECD, and the World Health Organisation (WHO)—also highlights growth in the number of physicians, midwives, pharmacists, dentists, and physiotherapists.
Expansion of the Healthcare Workforce
The report reveals that Ireland now has 76,558 practising nurses, marking a 6% increase from the previous year. Additionally:
- The number of physicians has grown by 4%.
- Midwives have increased by 3%.
- Pharmacists now total 6,250, reflecting a 9% rise.
- Dentists have increased by 4%.
- Physiotherapists have risen from 5,927 in 2023 to 6,390, marking an 8% increase.
Moreover, health-related graduates have also seen a slight rise. In 2023, a total of 3,455 students completed degrees in medicine, nursing, midwifery, dentistry, and pharmacy, representing a 1.6% increase compared to the previous year.
Increase in Surgeries and Medical Procedures
The report also provides insights into surgical trends in Ireland, indicating a significant volume of procedures performed in 2023:
- Cataract surgeries remain one of the most common procedures, with 39,347 surgeries performed—a decrease from 44,105 in the previous year.
- Hip replacements have increased, with 13,491 procedures conducted in 2023, up from 12,830 in 2022.
