Irish Catholic Bishops Condemn Israeli Actions in Gaza as Genocide, Urge Political and Public Action
Dublin: The Irish Catholic Bishops’ Conference has issued a powerful statement condemning what it describes as genocide and ethnic cleansing being carried out by the Israeli government in Gaza. The bishops have called for an immediate end to arms supplies to Israel and urged Irish political leaders, public representatives, and parishes to take action in support of the Palestinian people.
In a unified appeal, the bishops denounced the humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in Gaza and called on all Catholic parishes in Ireland to express solidarity with the suffering of Palestinians through awareness, prayer, and fundraising efforts throughout the month of June.
“The people of Gaza are facing mass starvation. Even the most basic humanitarian aid is being blocked. Food is being weaponised,” the statement reads. The bishops noted that over 600,000 Palestinians have already been displaced, with large-scale destruction and loss of life continuing unabated.
Describing the Israeli campaign as part of a systematic and phased ethnic cleansing strategy, the bishops allege that the 20-month military operation has resulted in the deaths of approximately 55,000 Palestinians, with vast swathes of Gaza destroyed and 90% of the population displaced. The toll includes tens of thousands of civilians, many of them women and children, across both Gaza and the West Bank.
“These attacks are unconscionable and unprecedented. It is morally indefensible for the international community to remain passive in the face of such a profound humanitarian disaster,” the bishops said, urging world leaders to take immediate action to halt arms shipments and stop the violence.
The conference also cited comments from Pope Francis, who recently highlighted the plight of families in Gaza forced to flee with the remains of their children, calling the situation a moral outrage.
The bishops further encouraged politicians to speak out at both local and national levels and to advocate for the rights and dignity of the Palestinian people. They emphasised the need for a sustained campaign for justice and peace in Palestine, including political pressure and material support.
According to recent polling data, only 11.3% of Irish Christians express support for Israel’s military actions in Gaza, while 45% support the Palestinian cause. Many in Ireland view the conflict as a legitimate struggle for Palestinian independence, and national media coverage has generally been sympathetic to the plight of the Palestinian people.
