Irish Citizenship: Processes will be expedited; older applicants are still excluded

Dublin: Despite a new system designed to speed up the citizenship process, old applicants are allegedly being ignored.

The process is dragging on the applications that were in use prior to the introduction of the new application system. Applicants claim that while new applicants are being considered, those who applied two or three years ago are ‘still’.

Many applications filed at the beginning of the pandemic are still not even out of the file.

In August 2021, Dilip Kulkarni, a native of Bombay, applied for citizenship. All necessary documentation has been submitted. Still, there was no decision. However, Dilip claims that a decision has been made on some of the subsequent applications. He claims that the only response he received was a letter from the Department of Justice last month informing him that the old applications had been received and were being processed.

Even those who applied this year got consideration. Applicants say that those who were sent years ago are out of step. To deal with them, a different system should have been set up.

The Department of Justice spokesperson expressed their regret for the applicants’ difficulties. The spokesperson also stated that there will be a mechanism for easy settlement of all applications.

In early 2023, the new registration system for citizenship applications went into effect. According to this, the processing time is only a few weeks. The Garda vetting process had already been completed. 13,000 applications have been sent links, and e-vetting will begin soon. Minister Simon Harris told the Dail that applications would be processed in priority order.
