Dublin: Irish passports have been ranked fourth in the Henley Passport Index, a ranking of the number of countries that can travel without a visa. Ireland’s jump from sixth place in the world ranking comes as the passport service faces a surge in applications and the challenges of technological advancements.

All Irish citizens can renew their passport book and card from anywhere in the world. Irish citizens can apply for passports online from over 70 countries around the world. Over 90% of citizens now renew their passports online.

The adult passport renewal process takes 10 days. Child passports and complicated cases require an additional 15 days. Irish holidaymakers advised to check the passports to ensure they are not expired, as new tools have been produced on online services.

Passport within 20 days

Applicants who apply online will receive their passports in 20 working days, while those who apply by post will take up to eight weeks. If additional documents are required, the application will be processed within 15 working days. The turnaround time is calculated from the date of receipt of these documents.
