Irish Prime Minister Acknowledges Outdated Weather Warning System Following Storm Eowyn Aftermath
Dublin: Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin has admitted that Ireland’s weather warning system and critical infrastructure are outdated, following widespread disruption caused by Storm Eowyn. The Prime Minister’s remarks come as the Electricity Supply Board (ESB) confirmed that power has yet to be restored to 1,500 locations, nearly three weeks after the storm struck.
Call for System Overhaul
Speaking at a press briefing, Martin acknowledged the severity of the situation, emphasising that while Storm Eowyn’s intensity cannot be compared to devastating storms like Darragh and Ophelia, the prolonged power outages highlight the urgent need for infrastructure improvements.
“It is deeply regrettable that so many households and businesses have been left without electricity and water for such an extended period. This situation underscores the vulnerabilities in our current systems,” Martin stated.
He confirmed that the Met Éireann weather warning system will undergo a comprehensive review to improve early warning capabilities and emergency response mechanisms.
Critical Need for Resilient Infrastructure
Martin highlighted that the lack of robust backup power generation systems contributed significantly to the delays in restoring essential services.
“Had we established a more resilient generator network, the restoration of power and water services could have been expedited. This is a wake-up call—we must enhance the resilience of our national infrastructure,” he added.
The government is actively assessing the storm’s impact, with a focus on identifying weaknesses in Ireland’s emergency preparedness and response strategies.
NECG Holds Emergency Meeting
The National Emergency Coordination Group (NECG) convened yesterday to review recovery efforts. Key updates include:
- Power Restored: Services have been restored to 766,500 homes, farms, schools, and businesses across the country.
- Remaining Outages: Approximately 700 locations are still without power, with restoration efforts ongoing.
- Regional Updates: Issues in Roscommon, North Galway, Mayo, and South Leitrim were resolved overnight.
- Water Supply: The Water Authority continues intensive efforts to address disruptions caused by power outages.
Telecom Sector Suffers Record Damage
The NECG also reported that Storm Eowyn caused unprecedented damage to Ireland’s telecommunications infrastructure, severely impacting connectivity in several regions. The group will reconvene on Monday to evaluate progress and coordinate the next steps in the recovery process.
