Dublin: Irish Rail has launched a nationwide recruitment campaign for train drivers as it prepares for a series of major projects under the government’s National Development Plan and Rail Strategy 2050.
The company is seeking new drivers for intercity and commuter services across the country, ahead of a significant expansion in rail capacity and fleet upgrades.
From next year, 285 new electric and battery-electric DART carriages will begin entering service. A new Enterprise fleet is also planned for the Dublin–Belfast route. Under the DART+ programme, electrification works aim to triple rail capacity across the Greater Dublin Area.
Infrastructure projects are also progressing to extend DART services to Maynooth, M3 Parkway, Drogheda and Hazelhatch. Expansion of the Cork Area Commuter Rail network is advancing, while plans are in place to increase capacity on the Galway and Limerick routes.
Irish Rail said it is encouraging applications from candidates with diverse professional backgrounds, including banking, aviation, the Defence Forces and archaeology, highlighting opportunities for career changers.
Chief Executive Mary Considine said the company is looking forward to welcoming new drivers as rail services continue to grow. She noted that with record demand for rail travel and extensive expansion planned, this is an ideal time to join the organisation.
Ms Considine also encouraged more women to apply for driver roles, stating that recent recruitment campaigns have seen a rise in female applicants. She emphasised that Irish Rail is offering long-term career opportunities within a growing and evolving transport network.
Applications for driver positions can be submitted through the Irish Rail careers portal on the company’s official website. https://www.irishrail.ie/en-ie/about-us/company-information/career-opportunities-at-iarnrod-eireann
