Israel Condemns Irish PM’s Response to Hamas Release of 9-Year-Old Emily Hand

Dublin: Israel has summoned the Irish ambassador in Tel Aviv for ‘reprimand’ after expressing anger at the Irish Prime Minister’s statement following the release of Emily Hand, an Irish girl kidnapped by Hamas terrorists, the Israeli foreign minister said.

Prime Minister Leo Varadkar described the release of nine-year-old Irish girl Emily as ‘overwhelmingly happy and relieved’ on social media platform X, writing: ‘An innocent missing child has now been found, and she is back.

But Israel reacted strongly to Varadkar’s statement, which softened without criticising Hamas.

But in another tweet, Leo Varadkar said that he had always been consistent in his unequivocal condemnation of Hamas and the hostages, but Israel did not cool off.

The Israeli Foreign Minister, Eli Cohen, criticised Varadkar for not explicitly condemning Hamas in his statement. Cohen argued that Emily Hand was not missing but kidnapped by a terrorist organisation worse than ISIS, accusing Varadkar of attempting to legitimise and normalise terrorism. Israel proceeded to reprimand the Irish ambassador in response to Varadkar’s perceived lack of condemnation towards Hamas.

Moreover, he said that the ambassador to Israel, Sonya McGuinness, will be summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the next two days.
