Israeli Ambassador and Jewish Council Express Concerns Over Deteriorating Ireland-Israel Relations
Dublin: Israel’s Ambassador to Ireland, Dana Ehrlich, has criticised Ireland for its stance on Israel’s decision to close its embassy in Dublin, accusing the Irish government of perpetuating hostile rhetoric. Ehrlich stated that Ireland has consistently approached the Jewish state as an adversary, employing extreme language that fuels diplomatic tensions.
The closure of the Israeli embassy comes in the wake of Ireland’s recognition of Palestinian statehood and its decision to intervene against Israel in the International Court of Justice (ICJ). Ambassador Ehrlich described Ireland’s actions as a “serious attack” and unprecedented in the past year. She emphasised that Israel is not asking for support but is urging Ireland to avoid unilateral actions that further isolate the country.
Ehrlich also accused Ireland of “indiscriminately accepting Hamas’s campaign,” while clarifying that the embassy closure does not signify a complete severance of relations, as no timeline for reopening has been set.
Jewish Council Chairperson Voices Concern
Morris Cohen, Chairperson of the Jewish Council of Ireland, expressed deep concern over the worsening relationship between Ireland and Israel. He described Ireland’s decision to join South Africa in the ICJ case as “ill-advised,” stating that it risks oversimplifying a complex and tragic conflict while unfairly singling out Israel. Cohen argued that such actions undermine the integrity of the term “genocide.”
Cohen also highlighted the significance of the consular services provided by the Israeli embassy, which are vital for individuals with familial, cultural, and heritage ties to Israel. Losing these services, he said, would cause significant distress.
While acknowledging that criticism of the Israeli government is justified, Cohen stressed the need for a balanced response. He noted that Ireland’s political leadership has failed to address the aftermath of the October 7th attacks or provide clear responses to questions regarding the situation in Palestine. He reiterated the Jewish community’s support for a two-state solution and expressed hope for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
