Tel Aviv: The Israeli Embassy has sharply criticised Ireland, accusing it of overstepping boundaries with its strong rhetoric on the Palestine issue. “Everything has a limit, but Ireland has crossed all boundaries,” the embassy stated, alleging that Ireland is actively working to delegitimise Israel as a nation. The embassy accused Ireland of perpetuating claims that Israel is deliberately starving children and killing civilians, even alleging that the legal definition of genocide has been manipulated to make baseless accusations.
The embassy also condemned Ireland for adopting a one-sided approach to the conflict and accused the country of ignoring persistent concerns raised by Israel about anti-Semitic sentiments. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar recently accused Ireland of anti-Semitism, a claim that prompted the embassy’s strongly worded criticism.
President Higgins Responds
Irish President Michael D. Higgins rejected these accusations, describing them as “a serious insult” to Ireland’s stance on human rights and its criticism of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Speaking at a credential reception ceremony for Palestinian State Ambassador Jilan Abdelijamid and Italian Ambassador Nicola Faganello, President Higgins reiterated Ireland’s condemnation of the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack but called Israel’s response, which has reportedly resulted in over 45,000 deaths, including children in Gaza, a “flagrant violation of international law.”
President Higgins also criticised Israeli Ambassador Dana Ehrlich, suggesting her previous statements reflected a lack of diplomatic experience. The president emphasised that Ireland’s criticism is directed at policy decisions by Netanyahu’s government and not the Israeli people.
Trade and Far-Right Concerns
Far-right groups have claimed that Ireland’s political parties are opposing Israel without fully understanding alleged strategies to undermine Irish trade through external pressures. These groups argue that the blockade on Gaza, coupled with Ireland’s opposition to Israeli policies, may impact Israel’s investments in the country.
