Israel’s Largest Aerial Offensive Against Hezbollah in Southern Lebanon Leaves Nearly 500 Dead, 1,650 Injured

Nearly 500 people have been killed and 1,650 injured in southern Lebanon after Israel launched its largest aerial offensive against Hezbollah since the Gaza war began on October 7. Among the dead were around 100 women and children, according to Lebanon’s health ministry. Clashes along the Israel-Lebanon border have escalated, with Hezbollah firing hundreds of rockets daily in support of Palestinians in Gaza.

Tensions heightened after Israel killed Hezbollah commander Faud Shukr in July, prompting the group to declare an “open-ended battle of reckoning.” Israel, frustrated by failed diplomatic efforts to halt the attacks, warned of a potential all-out war. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Israel’s offensive aims to dismantle Hezbollah’s military capabilities and urged Lebanese civilians to evacuate.

Iran warned of “irreversible consequences” if the conflict escalates further, while UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and EU foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell called for urgent diplomatic efforts to prevent an all-out regional war. The U.S. is working with allies to de-escalate the situation.
