Man Sentenced to Prison for Secretly Filming Mother-in-Law in Bathroom
Dublin: A man has been sentenced to three years in prison and ordered to pay €50,000 in compensation after being found guilty of secretly filming intimate footage of his partner’s mother while she was bathing. The sentence was handed down by Judge James O’Donohoe at the Dublin Circuit Civil Court.
The accused, Anthony Dunne, was in a relationship with Leanne Daly (34) and had been living in her home in Clondalkin, Dublin at the time of the incident in 2020. Without her knowledge, Dunne secretly recorded Daly while she was in the bathroom, breaching her privacy and causing her significant emotional trauma.
Judge O’Donohoe, while acknowledging that there was no physical injury, emphasised the severe psychological impact on the victim. The court also heard that during an investigation into a separate case involving Dunne, additional explicit material was discovered, including images of a workplace colleague and further footage of Daly.
In her testimony, Daly told the court she was devastated by the betrayal. She described the experience as deeply traumatic, particularly because the recordings had been made by someone she had trusted and welcomed into her home. She stated that she was shown the images by Gardaí months after the recordings had taken place, and that since the incident, she has experienced extreme anxiety, fear, and emotional distress, even struggling to use the bathroom.
Despite multiple attempts by the accused to resolve the matter out of court, including offers of compensation, Daly refused all settlements, seeking justice through the legal system instead. Dunne’s legal representative stated in court that the defendant did not attend the hearing, claiming he was unaware that the case was being heard on that date.
