Mary Lou McDonald Launches Sinn Féin’s Election Campaign, Calls for a Historic Government
Dublin: Mary Lou McDonald has called for a Sinn Féin government, stating it would bring historic change to Ireland. The campaign launch took place at Vince’s Hotel on Abbey Street, soon after the Prime Minister confirmed a general election date of November 29. Despite a year of declining opinion poll ratings, with Sinn Féin currently ranking third, McDonald’s rallying speech energised the party members gathered in a packed hall, frequently bringing them to their feet in applause.
The past few days have been challenging for Sinn Féin, with two sitting TDs recently departing and substantial criticism from media outlets, including RTE. However, McDonald remains optimistic. “This election is an opportunity for the people to make history,” she asserted, positioning Sinn Féin as the answer to Ireland’s desire for change. She urged voters to consider a new approach, saying, “Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil have long been given opportunities; it’s time for Sinn Féin to lead with innovation.”
McDonald also shared a personal reflection on the resilience behind Sinn Féin’s leadership, including her own challenges with health, her husband’s cancer diagnosis, and the loss of her father. In a lighter moment, she thanked her husband, Martin Lanigan, quipping, “After thirty years, I hope he’ll still cast his vote for me.” She reiterated Sinn Féin’s commitment to respect women, particularly public servants, as essential to her vision for the party and the country.
Responding to Trump’s Re-election: Diplomatic Concerns and Economic Implications
McDonald’s campaign launch took place amid renewed questions about Ireland’s relationship with the U.S. following Donald Trump’s re-election. When asked about Trump’s presidency, McDonald was measured, emphasising that “we must respect the decision of American voters.” She called for women to be treated with dignity worldwide and expressed hope that Trump would uphold this standard.
McDonald also addressed concerns about potential changes in U.S. tax law affecting Ireland’s corporate tax rates. She downplayed the risk, noting that Ireland’s corporate tax revenue surged by 60% during Trump’s first presidency, and she is confident this stability will continue. “Our relationship with the U.S.—culturally, economically, and within families—is resilient and essential to both countries,” she stated.
On Palestine and U.S. Foreign Policy
Turning to foreign policy, McDonald expressed hope for an end to violence in Gaza and Lebanon and encouraged the U.S. to reconsider its support for Prime Minister Netanyahu’s administration in Israel. McDonald affirmed that Sinn Féin would continue to advocate for Palestinian rights regardless of U.S. political dynamics. “Our stance on Palestinian sovereignty and dignity remains clear,” she said.
